Excerpt: When the glide arrived at her stop, she stepped off with a swell of other riders. She crossed the asphalt road, once used for gas-powered vehicles, and took a deep breath. I’m finally home. Sliding her card to gain access to the secure building, her heart raced in anticipation. She needed to be with Erik, find out the truth, and reunite with the man she loved. However, her apartment door didn’t open.

“Access denied,” the robotic female voice rang out.

What? She tried again with the same result. Sliding the card faster or slower didn’t make a difference. She couldn’t get into her apartment building.

“Please vacate the area. Authorities have been notified.”

Calla’s stomach twisted. Her throat tightened. Was this Malock’s doing?

She pulled out her communicator and contacted the building manager. “Taylor, it’s Calla Jacobs. My card won’t work in the reader. Can you please open the door for me?”

He grimaced at her. “I’m sorry, Jacobs, but I’m under strict orders not to let you into the building. Your apartment has already been assigned to another employee, and your belongings were taken a week ago to Planet Core.” He disconnected, leaving her to stare at a blank screen.

A week ago? Malock had planned her demise before she’d even left for Airondelle? Tears threatened to fall. She wiped them away. With PC cameras all over the city, she imagined he watched her and laughed. She stood tall, not letting him get to her.

Although she had no possessions, no place to live, she could still live a happy life with Erik. But where was he if not at her apartment? After they’d decided to return to being friends, he’d moved to Planet Core claiming she would be too much of a temptation for him if they continued living together.

She dialed his communicator, hoping he’d be nearby. When he failed to answer, not once, but five times within ten minutes, Calla lost hope. Malock had ruined her as he’d threatened. She had nothing left. Her only option was to return home to her parents. A glide could get her there by nightfall.

She squashed that irrational thought. No! She’d rather live in the rumored underground cities than go crawling back to the two people who’d admitted they’d only had her to gain status in the business world. She couldn’t go back there. She’d rather take her chances and return to Planet Core.

Sirens hauled her back from her thoughts. A police hover bike flew past her and ground to a halt. Glancing in her direction, the officer pointed at her.

I haven’t done anything wrong!

When the bike circled toward her, she ran—her first instinct. Malock knew too many people, and he’d reminded his recruits every day when he’d dropped in on their training. She hadn’t realized how those words would affect her until now.

The siren on the bike screamed behind her. She motioned to cross at the intersection where people and hover vehicles waited for the lights to change. But instead, she spun around the corner, hoping to throw off the officer. She peered over her shoulder to see if the bike followed her, and smacked into what felt like a brick wall. Landing on her ass, she stared up at the mountain of a man before her.

The guard from Planet Core.

She crab-walked backward across the concrete sidewalk. Hopping onto her feet, she fled back onto the main street. She traveled the way she’d come, unsure if anywhere would be safe. No one could escape the cameras.

Hurrying past her building, she spotted the hover bike reflected in its dark glass walls. The siren had been turned off, and the officer was almost on her. She scanned her surroundings for an escape route. Similar glass buildings lined the next few blocks, all owned by Planet Core. She couldn’t get into any of them now, and there was no place she could hide.

Her lungs ached from running. Maybe she should surrender. What then? I’ll be killed.

“Stop!” The officer on the bike rocketed in front of her.

At the same time, something grabbed her arm and yanked her into darkness. A cloth slammed over her mouth, muffling her cry. Shit! Things just went from bad to worse.

New Book Spotlight: If You Can't Stand The Heat by Taryn Kincaid

Blurb: Derek Dunne is a Cordon Bleu-trained food critic for the prestigious New York Monitor, whose scathing review of a popular Italian bistro has driven away all but the most loyal neighborhood patrons.

Lucrezia Serafina DiCicco is a clumsy business school drop-out, working as a chef and scrambling to keep her family's restaurant afloat, after her father develops diabetes and is banned from his kitchen for his own good.

Now, with The Monitor folding, Derek is searching for his next career path and longing to get back to his first love—cooking—while Lu is desperate for an influx of cash to save the struggling restaurant…even as her father puts his foot down about non-family employees.

Derek and Lu embark on a marriage of inconvenience to save the restaurant. But can Lu ever really trust the man who nearly destroyed her family, once noted her initials spelled “LSD,” and her food was like a “bad trip?”

Or will it be their hearts on the chopping block?

Excerpt: She brushed her hands on her apron and straightened her shoulders as she strode toward the bar. Not in the mood. So not in the mood. As if the hunky stranger had come here looking for a hook-up, rather than to send back his too-salty pasta fagiole or rubbery calamari or register some other grievance.
She looked a fright besides. The moon might resemble a pizza pie but amore did not live anywhere in the restaurant anymore, except in its name. As that bastard Derek Dunne had pointed out in his review. Vicious…but truthful, she had to admit.
As she approached the customer, she positioned herself with her back to the mirror over the bar, so she didn’t have to gaze at her sorry reflection. At least no one else was at the bar to gawk at her frazzled condition.
The man swirled a pool of condensation on the burled wood with his index finger. Strong hands. No rings, she noted. Up close and personal, his looks were even more devastating, the essence of hearty masculinity radiating raw, contained power, his body taut with  muscles beneath a finely-tailored suit that stretched across broad shoulders, his blue eyes intense enough to put her in a near trance. She gazed at his long, blunt fingers playing restlessly on the bar and imagined him sliding them across her heated flesh. Making her wet. Thrusting inside her. His thumb stroking her clit until it swelled, the pleasure so unbearable he had her writhing with passion, screaming for release.
Holy cannoli! What the heck was wrong with her? Was she that desperate? Yeah, probably. And yeah, he looked that good. Good enough to eat. With or without whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Oh, yeah. That image helped cool down her roaring libido. Not.
Suppressing a shiver, she cleared her throat. “I’m Lu DiCicco. You wanted to see me?

Excerpt:
“Medium rare.” Gee set a steaming hamburger buried beneath heaps of fries and onion
rings in front of Sela.
Everything on the plate looked delicious. “Thank you. I thought I ordered this to go?”
“Stay awhile. Enjoy your food.” Gee gave Rio a sickly sweet little grin. “L.A. stood up to you. I like her.”
The crease between his brows deepened. “Gee, no one asked your opinion.”
She gingerly picked up a fistful of scorching hot fries and ferried them over to Rio’s plate.
He appeared puzzled. “Why?”
“Peace offering.” She wondered what he looked like when he smiled. “I’m sure yours are cold by now.”
Rio picked up one of the token offerings, lifting the hot french fry to his lips. He didn’t even care he was about to get burned big time. In fact, he wanted the pain. Better to take the punishment now than suffer a shitload of hurt after he did something stupid like make a play for Sela López, which absolutely, positively could not happen. To his eyes, she was knockout gorgeous with killer curves. She had plenty of sass, too. She hadn’t backed down a bit from his most withering I- just-put-you-in-your-place look.Something else caught him off-guard—her scent. One whiff of her subtle female aroma had brought his blood to a boil.
Holy crap, what had he gotten hims
elf into? By the tone of her e-mail inquiries about the cabin, he’d come to the false conclusion Miss López was a dried-up academic collecting data about the Los Lobos wolf population. Instead, a Latina temptress with an ass that made him want to bite his fist and whimper had shown up.

Author Bio: Katalina Leon is an artist and author who can’t commit to a single genre. Her favorite playgrounds are historical, Sci-fi, contemporary, and most of all paranormal realms. Katalina brings a sense of adventure and a touch of the mystical to erotic romance. She believes there's a daring heroine inside every woman who wants to take a wild ride with a strong worthy hero.

I'm moving!

Yep, you read the post title correct. It's time for my blog to represent my author name, rather then an idea I had over four years ago.

Rise of the Slush will soon be no more, though I'll keep the posts up here for a bit. In the meantime, starting on Monday, February 23rd, all new posts and old ones will be moving over to my new blog site, soon-to-be website.

I've had a lot of fun posting on blogger, and while sometimes the site itself posed some challenges I have enjoyed the years from the early, random blogs to reviews to the more spotlight, interview and promotional posts I've been able to host for other authors.

On the new blog you can expect more of the same. I'll still be posting promo, Interviews with Victoria, and Thursday reads, but the blog will be joining up with a an actual website making it easy for new readers and current readers to locate me.

I guess you could say I'm growing up. Who knew that would happen? Not, me.

Stay safe and warm readers. It's cold in North America right now.

I'll catch you on the flip-side.

Spotlight: The Mate Challenge by Milly Taiden

Blurb:

Sassy Mates Book 4 ~ Emma and Mason

Emma Ferro wants nothing more than to accept Mason Wolfe’s offer to be his mate. He’s wild, sexy and can do things with his tongue that should be illegal. But Mason is also overwhelming her with his need to protect and keep her out of trouble. He needs to live and let live. It’s not like she’s killed anyone...yet. Until he learns she’s an independent woman, he’s going to stay waiting.

Mason Wolfe has a problem of the short, sassy and curvy kind. Every time he leaves Emma alone, he knows she’s going to get into trouble. It’s getting to the point he’s ready to slap a tracker on her butt just to keep his sanity. He’s busy holding down the pack, helping with fighting new rogues and a secondary threat that’s come to town.

When Emma goes searching for a missing girl, she finds a lot more going on in Blue Creek than even the biggest shifters are aware of. With the help of the least likely person, she’ll put herself on the line in order to save the ones she loves. Mason will have to find a way to help Emma or face losing her forever.

Reader Note: This book contains wild and growly sex (the hot and sweaty kind), adult language (dirty talk is our middle name), and violence. If this is not the kind of stuff you like to read, skip this book. However, if you like a domineering wolf on a mouthy curvy girl, then this is right up your alley. Enjoy!

Excerpt:
The first time she’d met him, she’d been visiting Ellie’s house to work on a project together and bam! Mason opened the front door, took one look at her and hauled her inside. What came next was something she’d never forget. She’d gotten a single look at Mason with his spiky short hair and crazy number of arm tattoos, nipple piercings and forgot how to talk. Then there was the immediate first kiss. Any other guy to try that and she’d have decked him, but Mason caught her off guard. He told her she was his and proceeded to kiss her like she was the love of his life. Stupid shifter and his sexy tongue. He’d destroyed her thinking ability way back when. Still, Emma wasn’t going to let some shifter tell her what to do. She didn’t care how sexy he was. She ignored his advances and proceeded to tell him she had a boyfriend, which she did at the time. Did he care? Not at all. He went on to tell her he’d wait because he knew in time she’d be his. Cocky asshole. Though Mason was an amazing man, he was a protector, which was sweet, but that led to him trying to tell her what to do. Her father had done that for too many years of her life and she was not going there again. Not with mutt.

Buy Links: Amazon ~ Barnes and Noble

Excerpt:
“Jace, stop it,” Zoé said, racing after his long legged stride. “Tell me where you’re going.”
“I don’t have time to explain,” he said, yanking a t-shirt over his head, and socks on his feet. “I’ll be back soon, we’ll get this party thing together, don’t worry.”
“Come on, stud, quit with the secrecy! You said you’d be up front with me! It’s one step forward and two steps back with you!”
Marni stood between her and Jace, her arms lifted high, her chin trembling.
Jace scooped down and picked her up. “You be good with my baby, baby-girl. Don’t give her any grief. And you,” he said to Zoé. “You’ve got to trust me. I’ve got something to take care of and I’ll be back in time for party preparation. We’ve got a wedding to prepare for.”
Zoé threw back her head. “I told you—we’re not getting married today. We’ve only known each other a little over a month.”
“That’s enough time to know how you feel, yeah? It is for me.” He gave her a heart-melting, good sense out the window kind of gaze. “You’re not getting away from me, ever, baby.”
“Who says I want to get away?” she said, exasperated.
“Exactly.” He sat Marni on the washer, positioning his body so she wouldn’t fall, and inclined his lips toward Zoé’s mouth. “We’re getting married. Done deal.” He connected with her mouth in a full on, tongue sliding, tangled, searing kiss.
Zoé barely remembered his words as her body responded. She reached up and circled his neck with her hands, opening wide to him, their tongues colliding in a slippery embrace, Jace pressing his ever-present, only for her hard-on into her belly.
Marni squirmed and squealed, making them break apart.
“There’s more of this coming your way when I return.” His green gaze bore into her and he tapped his fingertip on her nose. “But now I’ve got to jet.” He turned and raced toward the garage, heading, no doubt, for his beloved motorcycle, the Deus Grievous Angel.
Zoé opened the front door and watched him zip away. When the dust died down on the dirt driveway, she and Marni wandered back inside, clouds of irritation mixed with desire swamping her mind. A few minutes later, she heard a key in the front door. She and the toddler made their way to the foyer. “Forget something?” she said as the doorknob turned. She stopped cold, her mouth agape as the gorgeous blond stepped through the front door, key in hand. “Kate Bethlehem?” she asked, shocked. “Why is it you have a key to our house?”
“Who are you?” the woman responded icily. “Child care? And what are you doing in my boyfriend’s house?”

Release Day: Call Me Valentino - Same Hero, Five Different Worlds

I'll admit this project has me intrigued and I may have to buy it based on the idea of the same hero set in five different worlds.

Here's the blurbs:
Call Me Valentino - Fall in love this Valentine's Day as USA Today and Amazon Best Selling authors come together to bring you one sexy hero written in five different genres. Call Me Valentino uses the same hero set in five different worlds. Your new book boyfriend is a cowboy, an FBI agent, A Highland Laird, a real estate developer and even a vampire. Which Valentino will be your favorite?

The Matron by Kirsten Osbourne
Since being widowed, Cassie Morgan had devoted her life to the orphans in the orphanage she'd managed.  When a new church took over the orphanage and decided to turn it into a boys' home, she was both frightened and unsure about how she would make things work for the girls.  Being told she had to take fifteen young ladies all the way to Texas from New York didn't make her feel better.

Valentino Hayes had spend his entire adult life searching for the younger brother he vaguely remembered.  Just after finding a lead that would send him to Fort Worth, he was offered the job of driving a bus full of orphans to Texas.  He jumped at the chance, knowing he needed to not only find his brother, but work while he was searching.  He didn't plan on Mrs. Morgan's love for the children to turn his head.  Could he convince her to travel with him?  And how was he going to provide for a wife while he was still searching for his brother?

Undercovers by Jamie Lee Scott
When FBI agent Valentino "Vin" Jackson's undercover sting operation goes bad, he teams up with Special Agent Ellis Boyd of the DEA, who has some special talents of her own, to take down a drug ring working for the Mexican cartels.

The Brute and the Blogger by Olivia Gaines
Tino Boehner was up to his ears with Ebony Miller’s pot shots at him on her blog. Just as he was trying to figure out how to turn the tables, fate dumped her in his lap. Seizing the opportunity, he made her an offer she couldn’t refuse; come work by his side for a month.

A month can be a lifetime, or just enough time to make a man want to change his brutish ways.

Highlander, The Archer by Hildie McQueen
Valent made an oath to protect the McLeod clan after they rescued him as a foundling. However, after years of mistreatments at the Lairds hands, he questions his obligation to uphold his promise.

When rival clan attacks and kills her brothers, Ariana McLeod's world is turned upside down. That she's fallen in love with the handsome archer, Valent, is a complication and a blessing at once.  Amidst battles, revelations and treachery, is it possible to expect their love to triumph?

A Vampire's Penance by Jordan K. Rose
The chain of events set in motion when Rafe Valentino tries to stop his brother from making the stupidest decision of his life borders on deadly. Rafe goes from being one of the most terrifying creatures to walk the earth to requiring round the clock nursing care. As if being at death’s door isn’t enough, the senior member of The Vampire Guard has no choice but to reveal the heinous secret of his past in order to protect nurse Maddie Van Kool from throwing away her life on him.

Same hero, five different worlds, which Valentino will you fall in love with?

Special Note from the Author:
Thanks for letting me visit, Landra! Razor is being released today, Feb 6th by Decadent Publishing. It’s my first urban fantasy and I’m very excited. It’s part of Decadent Publishing’s Beyond Fairytales collection. Razor is a retelling of The Little Folk from Brother’s Grimm. Yeah, I’d never heard of it either. LOL. I hope everyone enjoys Razor as much as I did.
~ Jon ~

That’s exactly what James and Micah decide to do when one of them is diagnosed with cancer, and the other discovers a serious heart defect. When the doctor tells them to start working on their bucket lists, the two take a trip in an effort to create some good memories, and forget the ugly truths, while they focus on their time in each other’s arms.
Their vacation turns into much more than they anticipated when they find themselves drawn to a club like sailors to a siren. Several sexy waiters, some unforgettable lap dances, and one whip-wielding stud later, they stumble upon the answer to their prayers. Their sex is wild again, and the pair find themselves living for tomorrow. But with every answer comes questions, and Micah’s search for more may destroy them both.
Will they be able to recover from his thirst for the truth? Or will the men always live walking on the edge of a Razor?

Excerpt:
Micah made the landing and stood watching James ascend. A few seconds later, he reached the top and looked around. They found themselves outside a door almost as dark as the night, set into a wall of Cimmerian brick that disappeared into the gloom on either side. The doorman standing beside it was equally striking. He stood taller than James’s six feet, and wore only a black leather kilt and heavy boots that seemed to consume the lower part of his muscular legs. No one would dare challenge the man. His torso rippled in ways James had never seen before. His face was rugged, covered with a few days’ scruff trimmed precisely along his jawline. Before he could think of what they should do, the doorman spoke.
“Welcome to Razor. What’s your pleasure tonight?”
James stood speechless as the deep bass of the man’s voice resonated through the night. “The music. The music is wonderful. We caught it from a few blocks off and wanted to hear more.”
A smile emerged on the man’s face and changed him from executioner to guardian. “Of course, the music. You’ve found the right place. Just in time, too. Tonight is drawing to a close.”
He grasped the bronze door pull that was easily as long and thick as James’s forearm and opened the massive door with little apparent effort. He motioned them into the portal with a wave. “Go. Enjoy yourself.”
The pair moved toward the opening and peered inside. The room was dim, except for an empty stage bathed in warm light. James noticed the musical trio creating the instrumentals that had lured them through the foggy night. They glanced back to the grinning bouncer who encouraged them forward with a nod.
They stepped into the room and paused to take it in. From the elaborately carved dark mahogany bar lined with every imaginable type of liqueur, to the lovingly worn floor that had seen thousands of pairs of feet during its existence, it was all club. The couple moved inside as the door closed behind them with scarcely a whisper.
As they studied the room, two things struck James. First, they were the only customers. Second, everyone else in the room wore very little and were male. Their smiling waiter stepped to their table. James swallowed hard as he looked at the man standing before him. He dressed in the same boots as the bouncer, which were buckled to just below his knees. The remainder of the waiter’s clothing consisted of a black leather jockstrap filled to capacity.

Author Bio:
Jon Keys’ earliest memories revolve around books; with the first ones he can recall reading himself being “The Warlord of Mars” and anything with Tarzan. (The local library wasn’t particularly up to date.) But as puberty set in he started sneaking his mother’s romance magazines and added the world of romance and erotica to his mix of science fiction, fantasy, and comic books.

A voracious reader for almost half a century, Jon has only recently begun creating his own flights of fiction for the entertainment of others. Born in the Southwest and now living in the Midwest, Jon has worked as a ranch hand, teacher, computer tech, roughneck, designer, retail clerk, welder, artist, and, yes, pool boy; with interests ranging from kayaking and hunting to painting and cooking, he draws from a wide range of life experiences to create written works that draw the reader in and wrap them in a good story.

Thursday Reads: Sam's Temptation by VS Morgan

Today launches a new era for the blog. In an effort to bring more consistent features, I'll be posting at least two 'Thursday Reads' posts per month. These will be short reviews, and I'll stick to five topics. Finally, I'll rate the book- yes, no, or maybe. For my first ever Thursday Read I have Sam's Temptation by V.S. Morgan.

Blurb: On a working vacation in Montana, Chef Gabi Inez’s schedule allows her to enjoy planned activities and hangout with her cousin and his new family. She’s not looking for love, but spending time with a hunky cowboy sounds perfect. Gabi works hard, but every girl needs some fun. What if flirting leads to something more?

Sam Malone is the brains behind Blackbird, a guest and working ranch. Since his parents’ death, his sole purpose has been family and the ranch’s survival. Burned by love in the past, he avoids the distraction that comes with beautiful women. But what’s a cowboy to do when a sweet and sassy chef gets under his skin, only to be told by her overprotective cousin she’s off limits?

Hero: Sam is definitely the nice, quiet guy who's really a freak behind closed doors. I really loved this cross between cowboy and geek as well. I can respect a guy who knows how to crunch numbers, has a love for Star Wars, and rides horses like a pro. He's also loyal to the core and believe in putting family first, until he meets Gabi.

Heroine: Gabi is a geek chef. Yep and I fell in love right away because I'm also a geek chef. I watch science fiction shows and spend plenty of time in the kitchen.

Plot: Sam and Gabi are meeting again. This is the first time they've seen each other in over a year. While their reunion isn't based on their relationship with one another, it is a chance to rekindle an attraction that started with their first interaction. Business as usual is hard to stick to, especially since Sam and Gabi connect to each other like moths to a bright light. Also both Gabi and Sam have given up a lot over the years to pursue their own careers or help their families, this story is all about doing something for themselves for once.

Setting: It's a Montana ranch. Whoo hoo! I love the great outdoors, especially in books because I don't have to deal with bugs, snakes, and wildlife in general. This setting is a ranch with plenty of fun, horses, and adventures. Due to the length there isn't a ton of exploring, but what is provided are clear cut descriptions that gave me perfect mind-images of Blackbird. I was also very envious of their outdoor bar-be-que grill.

Sexual Performance: Sam and Gabi heat up the sheets and they don't believe in a closed door policy. There's a far amount of tension in the story as well and I was impressed with how Morgan heated up the pages to a fair simmer, but still left plenty of time for the hero and heroine to get together. Sometimes with short stories it's difficult to pace the relationship, including the intimacy, but Morgan does an excellent job of timing everything just right.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and rate it a yes. If you like quick reads, fun characters, simmering tension, cowboys, and all-things-geek you can't go wrong with Sam's Temptation. I also hope that Morgan has plans for the other Malone brothers. There are still three more that need their own stories. Especially, Nate.

New Release: Anabel Unraveled Deluxe Edition by Amanda Romine Lynch

Two books for the price of one. Available today is the Anabel Unraveled Deluxe Edition. Containing the first book in the series and the novella. Get it at: Amazon

Anabel Unraveled Blurb:
Anabel Martin’s world was destroyed the day her father was murdered.

After spending seventeen years of her life trapped on a Top Secret island in the South Pacific, she now finds herself in Washington, DC in the care of her former politician brother and his unwelcoming wife. While she wants nothing more than to be left alone, instead she is thrust into the limelight as a key witness in the Congressional hearings investigating the murder of her father and the very existence of her former home.

For Anabel, it’s hard to concentrate on these proceedings when the thing she wants most in the world is for Jared Sorensen to die.

Beyond Anabel: Defining Megan Blurb:
Meghan Sorensen's personal mantra had always been "Order and Control." She strove to keep everything and everyone in her life--boyfriends, her twin sister, her parents, and her brother, Jared--at arm's length, and made sure that they all did what they were supposed to. Even when Jared got into a mess with the sister of the former President of the United States, Meghan was confident she could take charge of the situation and resolve it.

Until the day she met Anabel Martin and everything was upended.

Meghan Defined examines the beginning of Anabel and Meghan's friendship from where it begins in Anabel Unraveled, providing insight into Meghan's motivations through her own viewpoint.

Blogger perspective: I have to say Lynch has given me characters to love, despise, and throw from a car. With a flair for the intelligent and dramatic, Anabel is a bit like Alice and chasing her down the rabbit hole is a little too much fun. If you like quirky casts, scandals, and drama (not the kind you save for your momma) then snag this book.

Author Bio: Amanda Romine Lynch is a writer, editor, and blogger who grew up in Florida knowing she belonged somewhere else. She now lives in the DC Metro Area with her husband and three amazing little boys. She is the Eco-Friendly/Green Living Contributor over at the Prime Parents’ Club and strives to live earth friendly in a world of disposable diapers. When not writing about Anabel and Jared or chasing around a curly-haired boy, she cheers for the Gators (in all kinds of weather) and occasionally remembers to sleep.
